Karen is a Licensed Practical Nurse with over ten years of experience in a supervisory position, which allowed her to become very familiar with the role of Health Care Aides in Alberta. She draws on this experience and knowledge to deliver the HCA program to her students. She is a strong believer in the practice of holistic client care, and uses this approach to ensure that the students who attend her class develop into compassionate care givers. Karen enjoys teaching at Excel Academy where the smaller class sizes and the “one on one” style allow her the opportunity to focus on each individual student. It is her belief that the clients whom our students will eventually care for benefit from this approach, as they in turn will see each client as an individual.
One of her greatest satisfactions is taking a group of students who have successfully completed the theory portion of the HCA program to a field placement practicum. It’s while engaged in the hands-on portion of the training where theory is put into practice that she sees the students develop the skills needed to deliver competent, compassionate client centered care from a perspective of safety. She enjoys observing the change that students undergo from the beginning of the course, acknowledging that some skills that are learned to assist clients can be applied to their everyday life. She states, “as the old saying goes, you have to take care of yourself before you can take good care of others”, and tries to ensure each student practices this in their new career as an HCA.
