We have changed the name of one of our core courses, Medication Administration for the Paraprofessional. It is now called Medication Assistance for the Health Care Provider to accurately reflect the unregulated health care provider’s role in medication delivery. Direct Support Staff who assist with medications are providing a supportive role in regards to medications that is separate from the scope of a regulated health care professional, such as a LPN or RN. This role includes providing medication reminders, assistance with medication preparation and monitoring for side effects. These changes are in alignment with Alberta Health Services (AHS) standards and Alberta legislation to better protect the safety of our clients and staff.
Highlights of Changes:
- Course name change
- More comprehensive review of key terminology such as the difference between medication administration versus medication assistance; the difference between a regulated health care professional and an unregulated health care provider, and the difference between observation and assessment.
- Inclusion of new material such as Excel Society’s client rights and additional rights when assisting with medications
- Modification of the learning material format to provide clearer understanding and simplicity, as well as encourage greater comprehension
