Consider the following scenario: A woman who engages in self harming behaviours and suffers from insomnia lives in a supported residence. She frequently engages in responsive behaviours which staff find challenging. Her profile states that she lived in three foster homes as a child. Trauma informed practice acknowledges that she likely has trauma history and is respectfully curious about how this may affect her life today.
Trauma can be any experience which overwhelms the person’s ability to cope and is unique to every person. Trauma Informed Practice recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma and uses proven practices to promote healing and safety for the person. Given that the rates of violence and abuse are high in the population of people with disabilities, this is a foundational piece of professional support.
